1965.The Year National Coney Island began.

An incredible story of the American Dream.  A young man starts a business that would grow to become a Detroit institution. One that would employ and support tens of thousands of Michigan families in the decades ahead.  One that would support not only the local communities where each of its restaurants were located, but all of Southeastern Michigan and the state as a whole.  An illustrious 55 years of existence, bucking all trends that say brands can’t survive generations – faced with challenges along the way, but always persevering.  Until now.

2021. The year National Coney Island….ends?!

How can this be?! We are hearing rumors that the current restaurant lockdown will be extended beyond this Friday January 15, 2021.  We hope that this is not true.  We have worked tirelessly to survive until this point.  We have complied with every directive and every mandate.  We have implemented every measure possible to ensure the safety of our dining guests and our staff. And, up until now, we have quietly done these things without voicing our concerns or frustrations to the general public on social media.  We cannot stay silent any longer.  We must unite with the rest of the Michigan restaurant industry and say that further lockdowns will result in catastrophic losses to brands big and small – many of which are already beyond salvation.

Here are some things to consider while thinking about reopening the michigan restaurant economy:

This posting is by no means any type of political statement.  It is a message of desperation from a local business that has invested the past 55 years in the people and economy of Southeastern Michigan.  A message that we want to survive! That we look forward to growing our business in the years to come and celebrating together with our loyal customers the days ahead when we are free from the grips of this pandemic and are back doing what we do best – serving the best Coney island hot dogs and Hani sandwiches around!

Stay safe and be well – we hope to see you SOON!
